| | A Nearly Perfect High Efficiency Washer | June - 13 - 2010 | | | by J.D. (Go Patriots!) from Colorado
After nearly 25 years, our old washing machine finally gave up the ghost.
Knowing we wanted a high efficiency, but not a high price, we did some research
through Consumer Reports and went to a couple of retailers before deciding on the
LG WM2050 (and its companion dryer). Consumer Reports, by the way, rates this
particular washer very, very highly.
It has turned out to be one of the best purchase decisions we've ever made.
It saves water. It cleans clothes plenty good. It runs quietly. It is easy to
operate. It looks nice. Really not much more to ask for.
There are a couple of drawbacks - like any high efficiency, the WM2050 requires
additional care steps to avoid residue and odor buildup (luckily, the washer even
includes a "clean self" cycle)...and it is only available in white.
That about sums it up. I'll skip the care and use instructions in my review...
and just summarize by saying you won't find a better high efficiency washer for
your money than the LG WM2050.

LG WM2050CW 27in Front Load Washer, 4.0 cu. ft. Capacity - White reviewed here is a very good energy efficient clothes washer.
Before buying this from local store I did extensive research on all available Front load washers in the same price range as this and LG WM2050CW came at the top of the list and excellent reviews by the online communities and I am happy to say that this washer is indeed very good purchase!
The Quality of materials is one which obviously will help the longevity of the washer, The product is made in Korea and quality of materials is good.
It is so silent that at first I was wondering if it is working? but the clothes do come out very clean. Love the fact that it has TRUE balance of the drum and does not shake or rattle during the spin wash cycle, the clothes come out nearly dry which cuts the drying cycle into half - Highly recommended!
PROS

CONS
[-] None for this price range
TIP:
(*) Keep the washer perfectly leveled for optimal results.
(*) Keep the detergent compartment clean after use
(*) Keep the door open for few hours for excess moisture out to prevent bad smell.
Most of the modern houses with copper plumbing may not experience knocking of pipes when the washer is in use, If you hear knocking of your house pipes do not panic, it is because the way this washer uses water in small bursts, if you like you can install a Mini-Rester Water Hammer Arrester (660-TR1)to prevent this from happening.
It is very energy efficient and qualifies for PG&E electric and water supply energy rebates up-to $175 in some areas of California, with some stores selling this at around $600 minus $175 makes this washer a great buy!

I love this washer. I paid about $650 including delivery and 7% sales tax. This is my second front-loader. Do not be afraid of front-loaders. My first one was a Whirlpool Duet, probably cost about $1000 in 2003 and worked well for about 6.5 years -- so that's disappointing -- sounded like a bearing was broken and that costs a few hundred to repair so I figured I was better off buying new. This LG is so much better than my old Whirlpool. I'm guessing the front loader technology has gotten better since then. The LG has very little shaking and vibration, it is very quiet. The biggest concern with front loaders is the moldy smell, I have used my LG now for one month and no smell. I did occasionally get the moldy smell in my old Whirlpool and some mildewy stuff around the rubber part surrounding the washer opening which I wiped down occasionally, but so far nothing in the LG. The LG has simpler lines on the rubber thing so it looks like less nooks and crannies for water and mildew to accumulate plus it has drain holes so the water can drain away. Also, I learned with my Whirlpool front loader and I do this with my LG and you should do this with all front-loaders-- you must leave the washer door open all the time, leave the soap dispenser drawer open all the time, and never let wet clothes sit in the washer, move them to the dryer right away. I do at least a couple loads a week in hot water and use oxi-clean powder on a couple loads a week. In the Whirlpool, I found that the Tide product for cleaning the mold smell didn't help that much, I found that Oxi-clean a couple times a week does a better job. I usu do an extra rinse on all cycles and the cotton cycle takes about 65 minutes and extra soil cycle might take 90 minutes or so, so the cycles are longer than top loaders. I use only HE detergent for front-loaders and I use only the amount recommended by LG -- not the amt recommended by the detergent company. The LG has a user-friendly display panel, and the soap dispenser is clearly marked for correct levels of soap. This LG plays a cute little song when it's done rather than an annoying beep. It spins the laundry really dry, so the dryer cycle can be shorter. I washed a king size down comforter in my LG using the bulky cycle, no problem. I just love this machine.

Updated review:
I love this washer! I did a lot of research on front loaders and chose this model over other LG's because it had the features I wanted and was significantly lower in price than similar models. So far I'm very pleased with this machine, which was rated a CR best buy. It was on sale at a local large chain home improvement store, and it qualified for our state's highest Energy Star rebate. We've had none of the problems that I had read about front loaders in the past--no excessive vibration on a wood frame floor, no water hammer noise, no odor, and the low water usage works fine. This machine has the features of similar models (other than the steam washers) except for the internal water heater/sanitize cycle, which I didn't need. It is very easy to use, easy to add options such as extra water or an additional rinse, and easy to change the wash/rinse temps, soil level, spin speed, etc. of the pre-set cycles. It has a stain cycle which I've not needed to use yet. You can also customize a cycle with your favorite options and save it. It holds a lot of clothes, gets them very clean, and is quiet. I thought our clothes were clean with the old washer, but this one cleans better, removing lots of what I had thought were permanent stains. I have yet to load it to capacity; our loads usually show only 2 of 4 possible bars. A queen blanket and lightweight coverlet and a couple of bath towels also filled it only about halfway. The cycles run longer than my old top loader, as all front loaders do. Most cycles are running between 53-73 minutes. (In my original review I had erroneously said 113 minutes; it was actually 1 hour 13 minutes, or 73 minutes.) It also has a quick wash cycle for lightly soiled items. Uses very little HE detergent and a tiny amount of bleach (I use 1 tablespoon of Charlie's Soap powdered detergent) because it uses so little water. We would recommend this washer to anyone. The matching gas dryer works very well, too. I wanted the pedestals but didn't want to pay the outrageous price for them. I've found that sitting on a stepstool or chair to unload the machines works fine for me, so I don't miss the pedestals.
Although this washer has a hot water wash option, and hot water does go into the machine, there is such a small amount of water circulating through room temperature clothes and a huge room temperature steel tub that the water cools off to just warm almost immediately. I don't know if the models with internal heaters keep it hot or not. But the machine cleans very well anyway, so this isn't a problem for me.
Some added info- For those who have had the odor/mildew problems in a front loader: In researching front loaders, the odor issues so common a few years ago were often caused by detergent and fabric softener residues that build up in the outer tub. Bleach kills bacteria but does not dissolve these residues. To prevent this, use only about half the recommended amount of HE detergent, or use a HE detergent that doesn't have any additives or residues to accumulate. (The "green" detergents such as Charlie's Soap are the ones that usually don't have any residues.) Also, don't use liquid fabric softener as it leaves lots of residue in clothes and the washer. We've had absolutely no problem in this machine.
